Essay on video games violence Essay The gaming industry greatly impacts how people, from young children to adults, spend their time. According to Health Magazine (2009), â€Å"90 percent of kids aged 8 to 16 play video games, and they spend about 13 hours per week doing so (more if you’re a boy). † Whether its educational, or just plain fun and entertainment video games have evolved greatly in the last 40 years. Today’s sophisticated games are in a class of it’s own with it’s realism and impressive graphics. With this ever advancing technology, comes better games with realistic situations. There’s no harm in playing video games for recreation. However, the problem lies within the violent video games and the aggression that these video games cause in children. For years researchers and experts have issued studies linking video games to aggressive behavior. It’s a controversial subject, nonetheless, it shows just how powerful the affect the games have on children. To illustrate, CBSnews. com reports a story of a 17 year who bought the popular game, â€Å"Grand Theft Auto†. In this game, the player is encouraged to do as much illegal activity and engage in as much violent behavior as they can to be rewarded with accolades and higher points. The more heinous the act, the higher you move up in the game. After playing this game for nine months, the 17 year old gunned down three men, two police officers and a dispatcher in a county jail, in the same style he was trained from the video game. In the kids statement to police, he said : â€Å"Life is like a video game. Everybody’s got to die sometime. † This is just one example of aggressive behavior as a result of violent video games, but there are many more cases. Children’s minds are very impressionable, and violent video games are harmful to their minds because of how interactive and realistic these games can be. According to research by child psychologist David Walsh, as further reported in the article, violent video games can be linked to physical aggressive behavior in children because of the brain. His study revealed that the teenage brain is not fully developed. Violent video games have a deeper impact on a teenage brain versus an adult brain. Walsh further states, it’s â€Å"largely because the teenage brain is different from the adult brain. The impulse control center of the brain, the part of the brain that enables us to think ahead, consider consequences, manage urges thats the part of the brain right behind our forehead called the prefrontal cortex. Thats under construction during the teenage years. In fact, the wiring of that is not completed until the early 20s. Therefore, since children’s mind are still underdeveloped, violent video games have a negative effect and cause children to believe aggression is appropriate. From the National Institute on Media and Family, six medical groups issue warnings as to the effects that violence has on children: (1) â€Å"Children will increase anti-social and aggressive behavior. (2)Children may become less sensitive to violence and those who suffer from violence. (3) Children may view the world as violent and mean, becoming more fearful of being a victim of violence. (4) Children will desire to see more violence in entertainment and real life. (5) Children will view violence as an acceptable way to settle conflicts. † From studies to real life examples of violent behavior, video games has shown to have an influence on children’s behavior. Violent video games will not be going away anytime soon. The only solution to combat the issue of violent video games is for parents to be actively involved in their children’s free time and take an interest in what their children play. Once parents are informed on their decisions to allow their children to play violent video games, they will know that if choosing violence, it will have an effect on the impressionable child mind.Parents beware. Catcher In The Rye: Everybodys A Phony :: essays research papers

Everybody’s A Phony J. D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, is a very well known piece of the twentieth century. It’s a story about a seventeen-year-old boy, Holden Caufield, who experiences some interesting things and people upon his being expelled from Pencey Prep. School. From having breakfast with a couple of nuns on a bus, to spending an evening with a far from seraphic prostitute, Holden handles each situation the best way he can. However, most of the people Holden encounters, he deems innately phony; Holden thinks almost everyone is a phony. Holden discusses how phony his headmaster at Elkton Hills, Mr. Haas, was when he was there: [Mr. Haas] was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life . . .. On Sundays, for instance, old Haas went around shaking hands with everybody’s parents when they drove up to school. He’d be charming as hell and all. Except if some boy had little old funny-looking parents. . . . I mean if a boy’s mother was sort of fat or corny-looking or something, and if somebody’s father was one of those guys that wear those suits with big shoulders and corny black-and-white shoes, then old Haas would just shake hands with them and give half and hour with somebody else’s parents (13-14). To Holden, it was blatantly clear that Mr. Haas was just putting on act to please the parents who showed up. He thought that everyone should be himself and not wear stupid facades.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Holden Caulfield lived in the Ossenburger Memorial Wing in his dormitory. That hall was only for juniors and seniors. The dorms were named after this person named Ossenburger who also went to Pencey Prep. School a long time ago. After Ossenburger got out of Pencey, he made a lot of money in the undertaking business, and he gave a pittance to the school. That pittance is why the hall was named after him. Then the next morning, Ossenburger gave a speech to the students of Pencey Prep. about how he was never ashamed when he was in some kind of trouble, but he would get right down on his knees and pray to God, and that you should always talk to God wherever you are. Ossenburger said to think of God as your friend. Caulfield got a kick out of this speech thinking how he could â€Å"Just see this phony bastard .

Educational Outings- L2B Leeds Tropical World This is a very popular Tropical Haven where you will find a range of exotic fish, reptiles and Birds from all around the world, all in various theamed room's to match their natural environment such as- The Butterfly Room- This room holds up to 40 different varieties of butterflies and it is also an ideal place for them to breed in a mature habitat.Step Ashore- This is the room which is based on a tropical island where many animals will be found in what appears to be there natural environment. The Amazon Tank- In this room there are many different species of tropical fish from all around the world. Desert House and Meerkats- This is the room where you are introduced to many different species of birds from places such as south America and the Canaries. Amazon South America tank- This room holds rare whistling ducks in its ponds creating an Amazonian environment.Creature Corner- This room involves many reptiles such as lizards, snakes and to rtoises and many other reptiles. What will children learn from tropical world? Tropical world will introduce a child to animal's in what appears to be their natural habitat, they will see a range of reptiles, birds, fish plants and gardens all in what apperas to be their home. This will help children learn activley and it will give them a better understanding of animal life.It will give them an oppourtunity to learn activley outside of the classroom, seeing smelling and hearing instead of reading out of a book. Rocks from walls- Rocks could fall off the wall and onto the walk way and cause someone to trip and injure themselves. Ropes on Bridges- People could fall onto the ropes and fall over them or get rope burn from them.Steps- People could Trip and fall over them. Risk Assessments for Hazards- Ponds/Swamps- Foll ow instructions and rules at all times to ensure safety to you and others, Stay within a safe distance of the water to be on the safe side. Rocks from walls- Be well aware of your surroundings and staff keep all rocks secure and safe. Ropes on Bridges- Stay aware and away from all ropes keep small children in sight at all times to avoid aany risks of an accident. Steps- Have signs marking where steps are such as ‘please mind the step' in order to keep people aware.Educational Outings- Temple Newsam Temple newsam is a freindly open space environment with miles and miles of greenary, ponds, streams and rivers. There is also Temple Newsam House a historic land mark, Court with shops and The very popular temple Newsam Farm where part of the landscape is covered with various farm animals and settings of what farm life was like back in the day, Also a newly built park for childrens entertainment. They will learn from a variety of historic farm setting's, the animals there pens and the descriptions situated around the farm. The historic house will walk the children back in time as they move from room to room and it will teach them all about how the past owners and their families lived in their time. Potential Hazards-Slipping on animal mess- If animal mess is lying around people could slep on it causing themseves harm. Falling into animals pen- If the fencing around the animals are too low then people could fall into the pen or children could climb in. Getting bitten by an animal- If people put their hands into the pens they could be bitten by one of the animals if they are not careful. Tripping over steps- In the house courtyard or farm people could trip over steps. Risk Assessments for Hazards- Slipping on Animal mess- Farm keeps should ensure that all animal mess is cleared from visitors walk ways as quick as possible.Falling into animals pen- Ensure that the fences of pens are a resonable height to prevent people from falling in or leave signs up warning of low fencing. Getting bitten by an animal- Leave signs warning people not to feed the animals if there is a danger of being bitten . Tripping over steps- Put clear signs up ‘mind your step' to be sure people will see it and hopefully avoid tripping. Car Parks- Be aware of the cars in the car park and watch where your going at all times to prevent crashes or other accidents. Statues- Leave signs up ‘Do not touch' keep an eye on children at all times to prevent people from touching the statues. Weapons- Put signs up ‘Do not touch' and ensure that they are secure in the museum to prevent accidents.

There is the Misfit who is a killer which clearly brings about the thought of evilness due to his cruel decisions and ability to follow through with actions. Then the Grandmother attempts to resembles goodness despite her true colors revealing themselves prior to encountering the Misfit. A family from the South is taking a trip up to Florida but the true journey takes place within their lives. One question that constantly comes about in the story is, what the definition of a good man is and why do so few remain in the world. Most of the characters in the story think of themselves as good people because they have that high self standard and would not dare think less then that. This mindset is deeply flawed though, leaving each character blinded by their own pride that they can not put aside and see their true ways. Don’t waste time! She completely overdresses for the trip in case they die that her clothing reminds them of how true of a lady she was. The narrator points out that the Grandmother looks down to other people as she is higher on the chain of respect due to her stature. At the start of the story, she criticizes the mother for not taking the children out and allowing them to experience the world and open their eyes to new sights and things, and tells John Wesley that he should be more proud of his roots whether his birth location or family. Despite being so judgmental for others, she fails to criticize her own dishonesty, hypocrisy, and selfish ways. When she comes after John Wesley about the state, she mentions the little black boy as a pickaninny which is a racial slur due to appearance in the same sentence. She later says that little black kids do not have things like they do and that if she could remind them of one thing it would be just that. She then illustrates this picture later with a lovely story of the good old days on the Southern plantations. Her thought process of a good man is one not perfect but not to flawed in his ways either. The narrator says she would have married Edgar Teagarden because of a smart business decision he made which led to his wealth. In the end, when the Misfit is murdering her closest and most beloved family members one by one, she commands the man to pray for himself and his situation. Yet she not once prays for her own family to be pardoned by the Misfit for her them to be spared. She is even over the top when she pulls a handkerchief out to cool herself off and tells the Misfit if he would dare kill a lady, effectively trying to save herself instead of her family. The Misfit does not seem like the type of individual to have morals, but he has a much deeper thought process that many characters in this story seem to lack unfortunately. The Misfit may be an unprincipled person with perverted beliefs but he is consistent and sticks by them. The Misfit is very aware of the type of person he is by telling the Grandmother that despite him not being a great man he is not the worst of them either. With the clear connection of consistency and self-awareness about himself being displayed the Misfit can rely on his beliefs despite them being twisted and cruel to guide him through his life journey. This is expressed drastically when Bobby Lee states that is must have been fun to shoot the Grandmother, in which the Misfit says there is no satisfaction in killing anyone. He knows what he must do and will not change on his plan and holds a firm position on it. This is a complete 180 turn to the Grandmother, who continuously fails to live by her own m orals all the time. The values, beliefs, and morals that people have make up their character. Moral codes are nothing more than what has come to be accepted by society for others. The Grandmother has it all wrong and thinks it is about where you are from and how you physically appear to others and what they will think of you. Although she thinks of herself as a lady, she manipulates and tricks those nearest to her. She sets herself to a high standard, but she lacks traits to match that belief and therefore is not what she so deeply wants. The Misfitrs moral code, although harsh, is persistent which allows him to live his life by his own rules with no care in the world of anything else. He is true to himself and does not beat around the bush to who he is, but the same can not be said about the Grandmother. A good man or woman in this case is hard to find in the texts of this story. When Red Sam tells the Grandmother about the time he was being deprived for the gas, she calls him a good man. She then attempts to tell the Misfit he is a good man because she believed that he would not shoot her because she is a lady or in reality because she just cared about her own life and would use any excuse to cover it up and make it sound better in her favor. What she does not realize is that she is not calling people good because they are moral, but because what they hold in high importance in their lives is what she holds high in her life as well. The only one that shows glimpses of being considered anything near a good man is the Misfit, because even though his beliefs are cruel and unjust, he is the only one that appears to stick to his life principles.
